Scenario 3
Imagine you are a new CEO of a small manufacturing company, and your compensation includes the potential for an annual bonus if your company’s profits increase by at least 3% in a given year. You are about to expand your operations and have two options for where to build a new manufacturing plant:
Option 1:
Build the plant in the United States. Because of high construction costs and wages, your company’s profits are not projected to increase by 3% (and you will not receive an annual bonus) for at least 5 years. However, your plant will provide 500 new jobs for American families.
Option 2:
Build the plant overseas. Because of low construction costs and wages, your company’s profits will exceed 3% (and you will receive an annual bonus) in the first year. Therefore, you will receive an annual bonus of $50,000 starting this year.
